One on One Interview with QMJHL Prospect Mitchell ShewfeltMay. 18, 2010 MHA recently caught up with former student Mitchell Shewfelt, 15, who is rated as the 61st best prospect for next month's Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft. Shewfelt played this past season for the Dartmouth Subways of the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League and was named to the league's Rookie All-Star team.
1. What would you say are your strengths as a player?
I would have to say my strengths as a player are my shot, making safe plays, and a good first pass when breaking out of our end.
2. How did you enjoy your year with the Dartmouth Subways?
My first year with the Subways was a great experience, we had a really great group of guys and a great coaching staff. It was a very professional organization. Although we didn’t go as far as we would have liked in the playoffs, we had a great season.
3. How did your year at MHA help prepare you for your first year of Major Midget hockey and high school?
My year at MHA helped me learn to prioritize my time better. The Subways had a very busy schedule and you have to find time to get your school work done.
4. You are ranked by QMJHL Central Scouting as a potential 4th round draft pick. Is playing Major Junior your short term goal?
I think for next year I will most likely return to the Subways, but would like to play Major Junior hockey in the near future.
5. What elements of your game are you hoping to improve for next season regardless of where you play?
I would like to improve on my foot speed and composure with the puck for next season, as well as becoming stronger.
6. Describe how you are planning to train this summer.
I will be training with Montera Sports Management in Ottawa for four weeks during the summer, I will be on the ice once every day along with a workout in the morning.
7. What advice do you have for current MHA students who are hoping to play Major Midget hockey and get drafted into the QMJHL some day?
My advice for MHA students striving to play at the Major Midget level and be drafted into the QMJHL is to work hard in the off season to get ahead. When playing Major Midget hockey it’s hard to find time to get into the gym during the season because you’re so busy. That’s why you have to take advantage of the time off in the summer to become stronger and faster come the start of the season.
