QUESTION

What is the most over-looked aspect of minor hockey player development?

What areas do players need to receive instruction and practice time in order to improve their game and reach their potential?

The answer to these questions is Individual skill development and individual tactic development. Hockey experts from all over the world are united in one notion and that is that players, especially young players (Atom-Midget) need to focus on developing their individual skills and tactics in order to be successful at hockey. Often due to time constraints and availability of practice sessions teams and coaches focus their attention on team tactics, team systems, special teams and situational play and sacrifice time on the development of individual skills and tactics to meet that end.

Hockey Canada is leading by example in this pursuit through educating minor hockey officials, coaches, players and parents as to the benefits of focusing on individual skills and tactic development and the importance of keeping a proper practice to game ratio for players. Their focus is to provide "each player the best possible chance to participate, have fun and succeed." They go on to say that the "focus should be on developing the players skills, not competition."

ANSWER

Maritime Hockey Academy is built on the philosophy that player development is achieved through practice, not through game play.

Our program affords our student-athletes the opportunity to develop their skills in this critical learning time (ages 9-16); the most important time for the acquisition of skill.

With that, we are offering three Skill Development Sessions to allow parents and players the opportunity to see hands on what benefits can be received through our program.
